Panama City with Kids: Top Things to Do for a Fun and Memorable Family Trip

Discover Family-Friendly Adventures, Must-See Attractions, and Hidden Gems in Panama City

After arriving at Tocumen International Airport, the kids’ eyes were fixed on the views out of the taxi windows, mesmerised by the Miami-like skyline of Panama City. It was hard to believe that when I was last there, just two decades ago, the towering skyscrapers were nowhere to be seen. Traveling from our coastal town in Wales to the urban jungle of Central America was a culture shock for us all, sparking conversations about progress, development, and how much can change in just a short time.

Our family set up base in Casco Viejo, Panama City’s charming old quarter, at Selina—a hip, family-friendly hotel blending nightclub vibes with urban cool. The boys immediately took to the pool table, while my husband Pete and I tried to relax fearing Little C’s wayward cue swings would knock over any nearby waitresses or make a massive hole in the blue felt. Not only the children were still on high alert mode after the long journey, and our two-bedroom studio with a kitchen and dining area was a perfect place to unwind, unpack, and get comfortable.

Despite the late-night DJ action at the rooftop bar, our kids slept soundly—our training in how to sleep through a party paid off.

Family-Friendly Things to Do in Panama City

Explore Casco Viejo: A Blend of History and Hipster Vibes

Casco Viejo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was the perfect starting point for our adventure. We joined a free guided walking tour, which eased us into exploring the city on foot. The colourful streets, crumbling facades, and colonial architecture were like stepping back in time. We wandered past trendy cafes and art galleries nestled among historic ruins, getting a firsthand look at the city’s storied past.

Our guide shared captivating tales of Casco Viejo’s history—how the old town was built after Captain Morgan’s pirate raid in 1671 destroyed the original city. We marvelled at the iconic Golden Altar in Iglesia de San José, famously saved from pirates by a quick-thinking priest who painted it black and claimed it had already been stolen.

Visit the Panama Canal: An Engineering Marvel

No trip to Panama City would be complete without a visit to the Panama Canal. We hopped in an Uber for a budget-friendly ride to the Miraflores Locks, where we watched massive ships make their way through one of the world’s most impressive feats of engineering. The visitor center and 3D IMAX theater (featuring narration by Morgan Freeman) brought the canal’s history to life for the kids, who were equally thrilled and disgusted by stories of the challenges faced by workers, including the fight against Yellow Fever.

The canal’s sheer scale and ingenuity were awe-inspiring, and it was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to see how innovation and perseverance can shape the world.

Enjoy Family-Friendly Dining in Panama City

Panama City boasts a vibrant food scene with plenty of family-friendly options. Our favorite spot was Mahalo Snack Shack in Casco Viejo, where fresh tuna poke bowls and mouthwatering tacos hit the spot.

For a special treat, we headed to our hotel’s rooftop restaurant for tacos by the pool—little C even sparked an impromptu dance-off with another young guest, proving that play and connection know no language barriers.

Day Trip to Embera Village: A Cultural Experience for the Whole Family

Back in Panama City, on our last day, we ventured beyond the city for a day trip to an Embera Village, a true highlight of our Panama adventure. Organised by Embera Village Tours, this immersive experience was just a short drive from Panama City and offered us a chance to step into the world of Panama’s Indigenous Embera people.

We were warmly greeted with music, traditional dances, and stunning handcrafts. The kids quickly made friends with local children, splashing in the river and exploring the village together. We enjoyed a simple yet delicious lunch of freshly caught fish and plantains, served in woven leaf plates—a culinary experience that added an authentic touch to our day.

We explored medicinal gardens filled with plants used for natural remedies, which fascinated the boys as they learned about the Embera’s deep connection with nature. The boys were thrilled to receive henna tattoos, each design telling a story of the Embera culture. Before we knew it, we were swept up in a lively dance, drumming and moving to rhythms that spoke to something beyond words—a universal language of joy and connection.
